Drayton Players - Oxfordshire
The Importance of Being Earnest
Directed By
Peter Jackson
This classic comedy of manners is regarded by many as Oscar Wilde's masterpiece. Set in the late Victorian era, the play enjoys celebrated characters and a sparkling dialogue rich in witticisms.
The play follows the entertaining exploits of Algy and Jack, two wealthy men-about-town. Algy is charming, feckless, frivalous and of good family. Jack is conservative, reserved, romantic and a foundling.
When confronting the formidable Lady Bracknell as a prospective son-in-law, Jack's inability to produce even one acceptable parent, proves a serious drawback. Hilarious consequences arise when the two heroes adopt the psuedonym "Ernest" to persue their romantic affairs.
Quotes: "To lose one parent Mr.Worthing, may be regarded as a misfortune, to lose both looks like carelessness" - Lady Bracknell
"A trivial play for serious people" - Oscar Wilde.
